C4: Man of Mystery

“Hello, I need to make a reservation. Yes, a single. First floor is fine. You have a 24-hour check in time, correct? Okay, I’d like to check in tonight. Three days. Thank you. Pay in person, please. Kim Keitaro. Thank you very much. All right. Bye.”

Keitaro ended the phone call and downloaded the Uber app.

“I feel like I owe you.”

Keitaro ordered a ride, and sat his phone in his lap. “For what?”

Victor’s head rested back against the wall, his eyes drooping lazily as he stared at Keitaro. “We weren’t supposed to shoot you. It was supposed to be a simple pick up. We flash our guns in your face, you agree to go with us. You fought back, and we didn’t anticipate that. They got scared. They’re not used to losing. But I threw punches too.”

“Repay me with information.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Tell me what it’s like on the other side.”

“It sucks. Everything here is bland. It’s like an old movie, it’s all gray. I don’t even remember what color my chains were.” He lifted and dropped the three chains around his neck.

“And I feel sad all the time. Not angry, not happy, not horny or hungry, just sad.”

“I see you in color. Your chains are gold. But you see yourself in grayscale?”

“Yeah, and other ghosts too. They’re all over this fucking place, by the way.”

“The Catholic teachings are true then.”

“I’ve been thinking…All night I’ve been wondering…how do I get out of this place?”

“Out of Purgatory?”

“Yeah. I heard you tell Cobra that you either save us or condemn us.”

“Or now, control you.” Keitaro glanced at the necromancer bracelet.

“How could you save me?”
